Today I held a pen
Now this pen had been cut from a goose feather using a knife (yes, a penknife) in the late 1300's - yeah OK so some pens date back to the dead sea scrolls but I haven't touched them
To think that the guy who held this pen had no idea that I would handling that as a historic artifact so many centuries later - I wonder who he was
My friend is flying to Poland tomorrow, boring seminar but it still a freebie that I wanted
I reassured her that the wings wouldn't just fall off, unless the engines exploded first, they would more sort of fold upwards
So we spent the evening watching the news about the investigation into the Brussels airport bombing
then we caught an hour of "Mayday, when planes go wrong"
I was trying to find "Airplane" or "Snakes on a Plane" on Netflix when she decided she no longer had a phobia and was going to get an early night
Dear reader,
I don't usually deal with inorganic toxins but I picked up a task for an investigation into a very ill young child: presented with stertorous breathing, drooling, convulsions, cardiac arrest which had been preceded with 'normal' diarrhoea, vomiting and trembling. Scarey stuff huh, the lab quickly confirmed the cause so all should be well
In 'my' world of organic toxins I am used to the most innocent thing turning deadly but I never thought that a child playfully using a whole tube of toothpaste to clean her teeth could do that
Dear reader,
To make toad in the hole you need to catch some toads ... or
Take some Quorn and place it in the freezer
Mix up the Yorkshire pudding batter like before
Take a deep oven dish, can't be too big though or you're going to need more batter, oven at about 180C
Bake some sausages in the deep oven dish in just a thin layer of cooking oil, turn them over a bunch so they brown evenly, when they're done add some chopped up onion and a drizzle of oil - back in the oven for about 5 more minutes - carefully [it spits] pour the batter mix over the sausages, then back in the oven for about 20 minutes
Hack it into lumps and eat it however you like, by itself, pour gravy into it - sooo good

You got a bit violent towards the end. xD
"Get into my face".
Yum.
Ohhoo yummmmmy!
by popular request, well OK someone asked
YORKSHIRE PUDDING
Take a packet of Quorn and set to one side. You're never actually going to use Quorn but if you have any, just set it to one side
Take 4oz of sifted plain flour, dump in two eggs out of their hens/shells, just less than half pint of milk, lump of butter about 2oz and a little salt. Throw the whole lot in a jug and whisk it a lot. Then let it settle while you play with the hot things
Take a bun/muffin tray, pour a little (teaspoon) vegetable oil in each part, put it in an oven at about 180C ish until the oil is smokin', then take it out an CAREFULLY (cos it spits) pour the mix into each part, then back into oven for about 20 mins
Take them out and eat with gravy etc. You can also add garlic and herbs to the mix but that mix up there is nice enough :)
Morrie :) Toad in the hole is next

Thank you for not bastardising Yorkshire Puddings. I'm the child of a Yorkshireman. Yorkshire puddings are a religion. :P
I've never made it because I don't want to destroy it- but I will try it eventually!
Dear reader, I know who you are
Today I thought I would try making Yorkshire puddings instead of buying them frozen and then heating them up
They're so easy to make, I now feel I was being conned into buying flour, eggs and milk in really small quantities at really high prices
The trick seems to be to have the oil really hot in the pan thing before you pour it in
Next week ... toad in the hole

Toad in the hole?
I would love your recipe for Yorkshire Puddings.... It has been sooo long.
Respectfully,

Toad in the hole is like Yorkshire Puddings (simple batter cooked in the oven, in little round pans, until it puffs up) - same batter, but in a long tray, with sausages in it.
Quorn make sausages, Artemka...
Today we were asked if it were possible to simplify the language that we used in our technical reports
I have been asked to write back (probably not wise), so I am thinking along the lines of ....
We do not wish to appear obsequious but we always find ourselves bound in a quintessential dichotomy when fundamentalsing the vernacular used in our telephonic or transcribed output ...
Dear Reader
today we had the second fire drill ... lots of noise and standing around in the cold. As we are using gas cylinders in the lab, I think I'll stand on the other side of the car park in the event of a real fire - dunno what would happen if they get too hot but it can't be good
Maybe we should keep buckets of Quorn around to smother fires, it has got to have some purpose after all
